New Golf GTi: Same old, same old?
Taken from CAR magazine’s website, these are the first few photos of the new sixth generation Golf GTi caught undergoing hot-weather testing before making its debut on 2nd October at the Paris motorshow. Unwrap all the black masking and the GTi’s fat new lines and that all-familiar grille is easily recognizable. Another major change is the car’s new exhaust system, seeing as the new GTi has given up today’s current blown engine for a brand new Audi sourced turbo engine that is set to be greener, more economical and slightly more powerful.
Being green is for pansies, I want power. Ah, you’re in luck. The forced induction Audi engine is said to develop slightly more power than the previous unit; power is now 208bhp and is developed rather lower in the rev range. But the best news is the punchier torque response, now up to 350Nm – up 50Nm – that starts from as low as 1,500rpm and doesn’t let off until 4,200rpm. Mated to a brand new seven-speed DSG gearbox, the GTi is expected to hit 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and is electronically reined it at 250km/h. The old GTi was only capable of doing 238km/h.
Anything else I should know about? It’s been reported that the new GTi will borrow a fair bit of parts from the outgoing model – and that includes the suspension, brakes and steering. There’s no indication of price yet, but we doubt that it would cost that much further from the current GTi. Perhaps around the RM240,000 mark.
