This car does nought to a hundred faster than you can say, A,M and G. What? Another super powered AMG? Yup. The SL65 AMG Black Series uses the bi-turbo V12 engine, same as the SL65, albeit with a raft of modifications. All this fettling has garnered the Black with a mind-boggling 661bhp and 1000Nm of torque. All this power comes at a price though; a cool ₤250,000.
How fast is the Black Series? Unfettered by a speed limiter, the mega-powered SL jets to 100km/h in under four seconds and on to a top speed of 330km/h. Largely helped by the extensive weight reduction (down from 2120kg for the regular SL65 to 1870kg for the Black) the SL handles well too.
It looks brutal. What’s been changed? For starters, the front spoiler, bonnet, and boot lid are all carbonfibre. Heck, even the rear spoiler that pops up when you’re doing 120km/h is carbonfibre. The SL65 is a real driver’s car, so the multi-piece roof has been chucked in place of..you guessed it, a carbonfibre one.
Is it any good to drive? The addition of a fixed roof has greatly increased the SL’s structural stiffness. That coupled to a motorsport derived adjustable suspension makes the Black significantly sharper than the regular SL65. But unlike the SL65, the Black comes with a regular 5-speed auto box, because the 7-speed unit is unable to cope with the tremendous amount of torque. To reign all this power in, the SL65 Black Series comes as standard with composite brakes which, when combined with the 265/35 R19 (front) and 325/30 R20 Dunlops, can be expected to dislodge your eyeballs from its sockets.
